〜か（どうか）

1. Basic Structures

1-1. When the embedded question is Yes/No type:

〜か（どうか）= "whether (or not)〜"

先週パーティーがあったか（どうか）わかりません。
"I don't know whether (or not) there was a party last week."

インタビューの目的（もくてき：interview）は、毎日スポーツをしているか（どうか）をしらべることだ。
"The purpose of the interview is to survey whether (or not) they play sports every day."

1-2. When the embedded questiion is Wh-type:

〜か = "Wh〜"
来週のパーティーに何人くるか、わかりません。
"I don't know how many people come to the party of the next week."

インタビューの目的（もくてき：interview）は、何時間ぐらいねているかをしらべることだ。
"The purpose of the interview is to survey how many hours they sleep."

2. Structure within the embedded quesiton

Verb	来るか（どうか）、わかりますか。
い-adjective	おいしいか（どうか）、わかりますか。
な-adjective	元気か（どうか）、わかりますか。
noun	学生か（どうか）、わかりますか。

3. Examples

Text.

今週はパーティーがありませんが、来週はあります。そのパーティーには10人来ます。

• 質問：先週パーティーがあったか（どうか）、書いてありますか。
  
  答え：いいえ、書いてありません。
  

  ---

• 質問：今週パーティーがあるか（どうか）、書いてありますか。
  
  答え：はい、（ないと）書いてあります。
  

  ---

• 質問：来週パーティーがあるか（どうか）、書いてありますか。
  
  答え：はい、（あると）書いてあります。
  

  ---

• 質問：来週のパーティーに何人くるか、書いてありますか。
  
  答え：はい、（10人くると）書いてあります。

  These questions all address whether or not a certain piece of information is presented in the given text; you can answer by simply saying "Yes" or "No" .(Restating the information in the text is optional, not mandatory.)

  This question asks you the specific number of prospective party comers. The answer should provide the number accordingly.
